What's Safer for babies, microwave or electric bottle sterilizers?

Ok so my mom wants to know which is safer for the baby, microwave or electrical bottle sterilizers. Since we had just received both, from the baby shower, my mom wants to return one but doesn't know which one to return. Answers would be appreciated.

  1. I'd return both and boil a pot of water! If you have the bottles in boiling water for 3 minutes they are sterile.
  2. Usually the microwaved bottles stay sterilised longer, I would google the specific brands of each one you have been given. I'm pretty sure microwaved bottles are sterilised for 24 hours, where as electric are about 6 hours, and are not really very good if your planning on going out for the day.
  3. I agree with Spencer's mommy. You only have to sterilize a baby bottle once, when you first open it. After that, hot soapy water is all you need so I'd return them both as well! hope this helps!
  4. You don't need to sterilize bottles at all. Washing in hot soapy water or using a dishwasher is just fine.
  5. I have a microwave sterilizer as it was a lot cheaper but I love it, it saves time boiling water on the stove, they are so simple to use and really fast. Yes if boiling on the stove they only need to boil for 5mins (is recommended) but you need to wait for the water to boil first then start timing. While I have read these days it is not as important to sterilize a baby's bottle everytime as we have clean water etc. I think it is better too. Unless you are going to wash a bottle straight away everytime the milk just sits in there and bacteria starts to grow. Even just rinsing wouldn't get rid of all the milk residue. Congrats on your coming baby and good luck.
  6. My baby's pediatrician told us to wash the baby's bottles, nipples, etc. in hot soapy water or in the dishwasher. We boiled all of it for 3 mins before using them for the first time but they haven't been boiled since. The doctor told us as long as they get washed after every use then they will be safe for the baby. My son is 2 1/2 months old and we wash his bottles mostly in the dishwasher and we haven't had any problems. I would recommend taking them both back and getting some extra diapers or baby wipes because you are going to need/use those more than anything.
